What's your reputation gonna be?

OK, that’s a trick question. Reputations are worth planning, insomuch as we can live and work deliberately to pursue our career goals with our own integrity intact. But we can’t exactly map out how well it will all be received in the marketplace, social arena, and other milieus.

Still, a solid reputation merits the effort.

Henry Ford (1863-1947), famous American automaker, said this about reputation:

“You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.”

Maybe he was right. Reputation, after all, seems to be something best viewed in the rear view mirror, not illuminated by front headlights. Future accomplishments and accolades don’t fit on a resume or into a pre-employment interview. It seems actual achievements count for a whole lot more than hazy dreams and unproven aspirations.

Ya think?

Perhaps Ford’s concise, but telling, quote sets some mental wheels a-turning.
